This article offers a brief analysis of how the Renaissance marked a transition in episteme and attitudes toward collecting practices, laying the ontological and epistemological foundations for the early stages of archaeology as an autonomous discipline. Through spaces such as studioli and cabinets of curiosities, artifacts gradually ceased to be regarded solely as relics and became objects of study. The main argument advanced here is that this epistemic shift was driven by two central factors: commercial expansion, which brought new wealth and exotic objects, and a changing perception of mortality, which transformed collecting into a legacy against the transience of time. It concludes that this new relationship with material culture - focused on classification and aesthetics at the expense of context - established the essentialist epistemological foundations that shaped archaeological thought in its formative phases.
